Band Social Evening

On Friday 30th September the band got together for a long awaited, and needed, social at the Rose and Crown in South Petherton. Wives and partners joined us for good food and good beer while the world was put to rights, along with adjudicating, practicing and caravanning. Lyn Newton and her family were our guests of honour and it was wonderful to have them with us.

Presentations were awarded during the evening for Best Instrumentalist and Best Bandperson, with plenty of candidates in the running for both. Anne Stone was awarded Best Instrumentalist for sliding across from the front row cornets onto fugal horn and fitting in brilliantly. Anne has played consistently well throughout the year and was worthy of her mention by the adjudicators at the National Finals.

The Best Bandperson award went to Alan Reed. Alan is one of those people that every band needs. He works hard at his playing while he is an active member of the committee, making sure everyone has the correct uniform and is registered to play. Not only does he do all this, but he is the constant face in the band room – always there to load and unload the gear, and open up every rehearsal night. If we had a kettle I’m sure he’d make the tea as well!

The final presentation the band had to make was for the inaugural Roger Newton Skittles Trophy. This is what the evening was all about and what the band had really turned up for. Dave Coles limbered up, donning his best lycra skittling clothes, while the even more competitive players jogged and stretched. One or two even had their own balls… It was a close fought game of “Killer” with plenty of banter and barracking. The field was slowly whittled down to the last few remaining “killers” with Lynda Read proving to be ruthless and soon putting the band’s principle, and her husband, Matt, in his place, as she fought for the trophy. Dave Coles’ practice payed off (shame he doesn’t do the same for his cornet playing) as he was one of the final survivors, but it was a worthy win for Paul Newton. A fitting victory for Roger’s son as he took the trophy home – until next time that is!
