Disappointment at Torquay

On Saturday 5th November, we made our way back down to Torquay for the annual South West Brass Band Association championships. We were competing in the 2nd section along with 7 other good bands, playing Suite Gothique.

Yet again we had a new face amongst the ranks, Hannah Yates, joined our horn section only a few weeks before the contest. In addition we welcomed back Caron Lissett on Bass Trombone, who deputised for Andy Tilbury who was working.

In the build up the to contest we suffered a set back losing one of our BBb bass players, Roger, through illness. Thankfully though Roger is now back on the mend and back with the band. Fortunately our remaining bass players were up to the test and coped admirably well without Roger.

Sadly for us, even though we played well on the stage, the adjudicator did not agree with our tempo's and we were graded 6th out of the 8 bands that competed. That said the remarks we received did not really reflect such a low ranking. High praise was given to the featured soloists in the 3rd movement, most notably to Julie Bulgin on Flugel Horn.

Thanks to everyone for their hard work and effort put into preparing for this contest. We will not let this result get us down. We have plenty of time now to work on the next contest piece for our main area competition in March 2012.
