Looking Forward to 2011

Happy New Year to all of our friends and supporters!!

After a "snow-affected" Christmas, 2011 has finally arrived and we are now looking forward to our areas contest in March at Torquay.

First up a big thanks to all of the players and collectors who managed to make their way through the bad weather in the run up to Christmas to help raise money for the band playing Xmas carols in Taunton and Crewkerne. Without this fund raising it would be extremely difficult for the band to continue. Thanks also to Waitrose (Crewkerne) and Sainsbury's (Taunton) for allowing us to play carols in their shops.

Torquay Contest - March

There is never much time in our band diary for us to kick back and relax. Christmas has come and gone and now we are rapidly preparing and rehearsing for our major contest of the year, the annual South West Regional Championships to be held in Torquay in March. After a slightly disappointing result last year, we need to get a good result this year to ensure we stay in the 2nd Section. However, on the back of two good recent contest results (Exmouth and SWBBA Championships) and with our new conductor at the helm, the band is feeling positive.

The test piece for the areas has also got the bands backing. Eirc Ball's, "Resurgam", is a throw back to when test pieces were not just written to test the players abilities, but they were meant to be enjoyable to listen to and play. Resurgam is not an easy piece to perform well, but it is an enjoyable piece to play with some beautiful melodies and contrasting passages. Dave will be pushing us hard over the coming months to make sure we are well prepared to give our best performance on the stage at Torquay.

New - Old Players

We are going through a transitional phase in the band with some players leaving, and others joining. This New Year sees us welcome back a couple of old friends of the band, Steve Taylor rejoins after a short break and Gordon Harvey is also welcomed back to the band after a brief stint playing with Storm Brass.

We are still on the lookout for new players, cornet players in particular. Cornet players seem to be a very rare commodity in our area. If you know of any players out there who has been thinking about getting back into the banding, please tell them to get in touch.

Concert Plans for 2011

As you will be able to tell by our diary, the band does not have a lot of engagements booked up for this year. If you are interested in booking the band for a concert / fete or fund raiser, please get in touch with our Band Secretary, Lynda Read on 01935 472706.

Released On 6th Jan 2011
