Tatworth School Concert

Billed as a concert to celebrate and inspire the musicians of the future, this concert did not disappoint. Young and old gathered together in Tatworth School Hall to provide an evening of musical entertainment.

The 30 strong school orchestra, consisting of flutes, clarinets, recorders, cornets, keyboard, saxophone and drums, wowed the audience with Sue Flynn’s arrangements of Captain Pugwash, Star Wars, Bare Necessities and The Rhythm of Life. Sue’s skilful arrangements are suitable for all abilities, so children who have just started to learn their instrument can play alongside their more experienced peers. Mums, Dads and Grandparents were suitable impressed, as were many members of Phoenix Brass.

The Band played a program of light music including Ticket to Ride, Pirates of the Caribbean and Avatar. Dave Hatton had a prior engagement so Tom Lisett kindly took the helm for us and did a fantastic job. His words captured the occasion beautifully as he thanked parents for the support they give their children and promoted music making as a life-long hobby.

Our featured soloist, Mark Bulgin, gave another excellent performance of The Lost Chord. The continued progress of this former Tatworth School student was evident to all, especially to his former teachers Sue Flynn and David Knight. Myra and Ash did a fantastic job on percussion and fascinated the children of the orchestra.

Extra thanks go to Emma, who stepped up to principal cornet for the evening and did a grand job. This concert would not have been possible without the support of our guests, Dave Neale, Terry (Emma’s Grandad!) and Jas Pavey, thank you. It was also lovely to see Bass player Roger Newton in the audience following his recent absence from the bandroom due to illness.

Speaking after the performance the school’s Headteacher, David Knight said, “It was a fantastic evening and great experience for our orchestra……………………….when are we doing it again?”
