History of Brass Bands in Crewkerne
The Beginning
Brass bands have been associated with Crewkerne, Somerset for nearing 100 years. The parish records indicate that there was a brass band formed as far back as 1923, but we have no other information about the band at this time.
The next records relating to banding in Crewkerne comes from a book by Roy Newsome, entitled "The Modern Brass Band". The book documents a history of brass bands from the 1930s through to the new millenium. Crewkerne is mentioned on Page 41 in relation to the town bands participation in the Band Sunday May celebrations somewhen in the late 1930s.
Band Sunday, usually the first Sunday in May, took on a variety of forms. BBN (Brass Band News) told of one band that took it very seriously, at Crewkerne in Somerset. Here, the band paraded through the town to the parish church, leading the singing during the service. After lunch it visited a hospital and local almshouses, and during the evening played in the market square. the day was summed up thus: "A topping day - beautiful weather - splendid enthusiasm in band and public alike - finally, a good collection for funds."
