Torquay Contest

Yesterday saw Phoenix travel to Torquay to take part in the 62nd annual South West Brass Band Association Championships. The contest was well supported by many bands some travelling as far as from Milton Keynes, with 35 bands playing in total, including two training bands and a youth band.

Phoenix performed as part of the 2nd section playing Edward Gregsons 'Variations on Laudate Dominum'. The day included a couple of firsts for Phoenix, notably Marie Osborne doing a great job on solo horn and our youngest musician Nicola Vincent on percussion who did excellently with the very exposed percussion part - well done Nic! Thanks also to Pete Yates who helped us out on euphonium, lets hope its not a one off it would be great to have you playing with the band more.

After a long day of waiting the performance went well and was enjoyed by the band, with much positive feedback from supporters and members of other bands. Unfortunately, Phoenix were only awarded 5th place by adjudicator Steve Pritchard-Jones. However the band enjoyed the day and also the preparation of the piece and are now looking forward to the Regionals, back in Torquay in March. Thanks to our conductor Paul Slator for the enjoyable rehearsals on this piece and to all the band for their hard work.
