Band Social & Presentation Evening 2017

On Friday 20th October the band got together for a long awaited, and much needed social at the Rose and Crown, East Lambrook. Wives and partners joined us for good food and good beer while the world was put to rights.

Presentations were awarded during the evening for Best Instrumentalist and Best Bandperson, with plenty of candidates in the running for both. Martin Stokes was awarded Best Instrumentalist for his consistent and admirable playing on Solo Trombone and the Best Bandperson award went to our Principal Euphonium player; Chris Murphy. Chris is one of those people that every band needs. He works hard at his playing while he is an active member of the committee, and regularly can be found loading and unloading a bag of stands!

The final presentation the band had to make was the Roger Newton Trophy awarded to winner of the, now annual skittles tournament. This is what the evening was all about and what the band had really turned up for.

Tom Griffin limbered up, giving a final polish to his best Laura Ashley Skittles ball while the even more competitive players jogged and stretched. One or two had even donned some lycra for extra aerodynamics. It was a close fought game of “Killer” with plenty of banter and barracking.

The field was slowly whittled down to the last few but it was arm length that prevailed as MD Tom drew on his Marine training to be declared the victor. Last years winner Paul Newton presented Tom with his trophy as the other players cheered and began working out their winning strategies for next years tournament!
